Core Principals
Education
The Robert Capoferri Foundation believes that strong schools are the lifeblood of a thriving community. Without high-performing and well-resourced educational opportunities, Hammonton risks a declining quality of life. For this reason, the Foundation focuses its resources on supporting public education through donations, grants, scholarships, and in-kind support designed to enhance learning outcomes.
Our efforts are especially focused on children who are economically at risk or who require special education services. The Foundation also recognizes the critical role that arts, athletics, and extracurricular activities play in adolescent development. Participation in teams, clubs, and organized groups helps instill discipline, confidence, and collaboration—skills that prepare young people for success long after their formal education in Hammonton concludes.
Cultural Tradition
From its founding in 1886 through the early 1900s—when Italian immigrants arrived to support Hammonton’s garment industry—to the growth of the Hispanic community after the 1950s in support of local agriculture, Hammonton has evolved into a true melting pot of multi-generational families. The traditions forged over more than 150 years have shaped the community so many proudly call home today.
The Foundation supports and celebrates these traditions through involvement in hallmark community events such as the Red, White and Blueberry Festival, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival, Halloween and Christmas parades, and Puerto Rican Civic Association Week. These events honor Hammonton’s rich history, foster pride among younger generations, and invite visitors to experience the unique character of our town. We are dedicated to supporting these events and ensuring their success.
The Robert J. Capoferri Foundation is working closely with leadership at Saint Mary of Mount Carmel Parish to explore opportunities to repurpose parish-owned properties and buildings that continue to serve the people of Hammonton while remaining fully aligned with the church’s mission, traditions, and values. As one of the most deeply rooted institutions in Hammonton, the parish has long played an important role in bringing generations of families together through faith, culture, and deep-rooted community traditions that remain central to the town’s identity today. Through this partnership, the Foundation aims to preserve and thoughtfully revitalize these historic spaces to meet the evolving needs of Hammonton community members by expanding townwide programming, hosting cultural events, launching educational initiatives, and organizing family-centered activities that strengthen community connections for future generations.
Economic Development & Empowerment
On the grounds of The Bellevue sits a rock commemorating President Ronald Reagan’s visit to Hammonton in 1984. During that visit, President Reagan observed that “Small business is the backbone of our economy and the cornerstone of our free enterprise system.” The Foundation wholeheartedly agrees and uses the President’s words to drive this segment of our mission.
For that reason, the Robert Capoferri Foundation is committed to encouraging economic vitality within the Town of Hammonton through charitable, educational, and community-based initiatives. While Hammonton has long served as a bedroom community for residents commuting to Atlantic City and Philadelphia, the Foundation envisions a future with more opportunities for residents to work locally. By promoting Hammonton as an attractive place to start and grow a business, and by supporting efforts that support economic growth in the Town of Hammonton, the Foundation seeks to strengthen the town’s economic foundation for the benefit of the community as a whole.
Historical Preservation
Hammonton’s history—and the people who built it—are central to the community’s identity. The town’s long tradition of civic leadership, volunteerism, and public service demonstrates what a committed group of residents can accomplish when they care deeply about their hometown.
Through tours, events, and programming centered around The Bellevue’s historic downtown location, the Foundation celebrates the individuals, businesses, organizations, and defining moments that shaped Hammonton. By honoring the past, the Foundation seeks to preserve Hammonton’s story for future generations while deepening community pride and understanding.
